From New York to Rome, Challenging Diabetes
Policy makers, doctors and patients finally together at the Changing Diabetes Barometer Forum to defeat diabetes

4 April 2008: Today the first Italian Changing Diabetes Barometer Forum is celebrated in Rome.
For the first time in Italy, policy makers, representatives of national and regional institutions, scientific societies and patient associations get together and exchange ideas to build the ‘barometer.’
One of the important novelties is represented by the synergy of research and study projects which have so far been carried out separately. In fact, the AMD Annali (clinical data on the quality of care provided by diabetes centres), the ARNO Observatory (on diabetes costs), the DAI Study (on diabetes-related complications), the D.A.W.N. Study (a survey on the psychological aspects of the disease) and the Quadri Study (the quality of healthcare as perceived by people with diabetes) will “work together” to implement the barometer initiative in cooperation with institutions.
The Barometer is a “tool” based on national and international parameters and aimed at measuring the state of the art of diabetes and its care through the evaluation of the performance of care centres, amd the identification of best practice without overlooking the actual life experience of people with diabetes.
The protagonists of this event, therefore, commit themselves to take joint, concrete action to create a measurement system immediately applicable in the national healthcare system.
The medium-term aim is to activate, together with all the other countries involved in the project, a common, continuously updated benchmark system.
The Changing Diabetes Barometer Forum, promoted by the IDF (International Diabetes Federation) and Novo Nordisk, a leading corporation in the field of diabetes care, is the Italian response to the “Global Changing Diabetes Leadership Forum” held in New York last year, where 21 countries committed themselves to take synergic, global action to bring this silent pandemic under control.
Today the Italian delegation in New York passes the baton on to those who – at a national and local level – are going to carry out this ambitious project.
Official data (source: ISTAT) shows that 4.6% of Italians, i.e., approximately 2,700,000 people, suffer from diabetes. However, even more alarming is the awareness that this official figure only represents the tip of the iceberg. In fact, according to the estimates, over 3 million people suffer from diabetes and are not aware of it.

Diabetes is one of the most expensive health problems in the world!
Currently 246 million people worldwide suffer from diabetes, and projections indicate that by 2025 their number will reach 380 million.
